He works spontaneously, letting music and memory drive each decision, and the drips record the speed at which those decisions were made.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe imagery underneath is not quite legible and is not meant to be. Branches, undergrowth, and the low light of a Pacific Northwest forest are implied rather than depicted, filtered through the same haze that softens a memory. The title is a description of the process as much as the subject: the light in the painting has to be found through the layers, not applied on top of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is the first panel of a three-panel work, self-contained but built to speak to its companions.
