About the Artwork
"3 of a Kind" by Haleh Mashian is a portrayal of obsession, strategy, and the psychological weight of competition. The painting captures a moment of deep immersion, where the players are no longer just participants in a game but figures trapped in a ritual of risk and calculation. Cards and currency lie scattered like artifacts of devotion, reinforcing the idea that, for these players, the game is really about survival.
The tight framing and compressed perspective intensify the scene, making the viewer feel like another player at the table, caught in the tension of unspoken rivalry. There’s a cinematic quality to how Mashian stages the moment, heightening the feeling of psychological entrapment. "3 of a Kind" is more than a depiction of a game—it’s a meditation on the fine line between control and obsession. Through expressive figuration and emotional depth, Mashian transforms a simple scene into a haunting reflection on risk, addiction, and the relentless pursuit of victory.
