Beyond the Horizon

Beyond the Horizon is a portrait pushed to the edge of dissolution. A figure tilts their head back against a black ground, eyes lifted, while petals in cream, violet, coral and deep red crowd in from every side and settle across the face itself. A pale plane of blue and white cuts horizontally over the eyes like a mask, or like a fragment of sky that has drifted too close.

The face beneath is painted with warmth and specificity, which is what makes the interruptions land. Engel does not soften the figure into pattern; he renders it, then allows the surrounding world to overwrite parts of it. Petal and skin are given the same weight, so neither reads as the true surface.

The upward tilt of the head sets the emotional register. It is a posture of transport rather than distress, and the flowers gathering around the figure feel like something being received rather than something closing in. The horizon of the title is not in the picture, only implied by where the eyes are pointed.

Against the black ground the color carries enormous force, and the composition holds the viewer at close range. The painting works as a portrait, as a study in fragmentation, and as an image of a self in the middle of becoming something else.
