About the Artwork
Part of Thomas Piekunka’s ongoing Bliss series, this work is inspired by Joseph Campbell’s simple yet challenging admonition: “Follow your bliss.” Through his signature freed painting technique, Piekunka transforms paint from a surface-bound medium into a suspended, immersive environment, allowing color and material to exist independently in space.
Composed of cascading strands layered with luminous blues, greens, and passages of golden yellow, the work evokes the sensation of moving through a dense landscape or shimmering curtain of light. As viewers shift their position, the composition continuously changes, revealing new relationships between transparency, color, and depth.
Piekunka’s process challenges the traditional boundaries of painting while remaining deeply connected to its essential elements: color, gesture, and materiality. The liberated paint skins create a work that is simultaneously painting, sculpture, and spatial experience.
In the context of the Bliss series, the work becomes a meditation on freedom—not as a destination, but as an ongoing act of discovery. Like Campbell’s philosophy, it invites viewers to trust intuition, embrace transformation, and remain open to the unexpected paths that lead toward fulfillment.
