About the Artwork

Bliss exemplifies Thomas Piekunka’s distinctive “freed painting” technique, a process that expands painting beyond the confines of the canvas. Layers of acrylic are built up, released from their support, and reassembled into a suspended composition that occupies space as both painting and sculpture.

Composed of shimmering whites, pale lilacs, soft blues, and mint greens, the work creates an atmosphere of lightness and movement. The cascading strands form a translucent veil through which color, texture, and light interact, producing an experience that shifts as the viewer moves around it. Rather than presenting a fixed image, Piekunka invites a direct encounter with the material itself.

His practice engages a lineage of artists who challenged the traditional picture plane, yet his approach is uniquely focused on liberation rather than deconstruction. By freeing the painted surface from its support, he allows color and form to exist independently in space, transforming painting into an immersive environment.

In Bliss, material becomes metaphor. The work suggests transformation, release, and possibility, embodying Piekunka’s ongoing exploration of what painting can become when it is no longer bound by the limits of the canvas.
