About the Artwork

Haleh Mashian’s Calcified Love explores the delicate tension between memory and the passage of time. In this mixed media painting, an elderly couple sits side by side, their physical distance mirroring emotional separation. On the left, a younger version of the same pair is shown in a moment of affection and celebration—a visual echo of love once full of warmth and connection. Through this contrast, Mashian reflects on how relationships evolve, sometimes hardening with years into quiet endurance rather than passion.

Mashians’s layered textures and expressive brushwork in Calcified Love deepen the emotional resonance of the scene. Soft washes of color blend with more defined strokes, creating a sense of fading memory and the erosion of intimacy over time. The composition captures both the tenderness of recollection and the ache of disconnection, balancing nostalgia with realism.

About the Artist

As a painter and creative expressionist, Mashian's abstract works reveal her appreciation of color theory, compositional form, and studying positive and negative space.
