Clown

In Clown, Thomas Piekunka transforms painting into an immersive sculptural experience through his signature free painting technique. Cascading strands of black and white paint form a rhythmic framework, punctuated by vibrant bursts of neon pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet that animate the work with exuberant energy.

The title references the Koshare figures of Native American tradition; sacred clowns and trickster beings who impart wisdom through humor, paradox, and unconventional behavior. Often associated with the raven, a symbol of intelligence and transformation, these figures challenge established norms in order to reveal deeper truths. Piekunka captures that spirit through a composition that embraces both playfulness and discipline.

By liberating paint from the confines of the canvas, the artist allows color and material to occupy space directly.
