About the Artwork
Drift into Ascent holds a unique and exciting place within Haleh Mashian's practice. It is a painting where two of her defining series converge. Teardrops and butterflies share the canvas in both tension and harmony. The piece reflects a storm that carries life within it.
The palette is refined and minimalist. Charcoal, graphite, and black are punctuated by bursts of amber gold and flashes of silver. The gold can be read as light breaking through a dark sky. Mashian has spoken of transformation as a central theme in her work, and here that theme is rendered atmospherically. The dark forms fall, the gold burns through, and the butterflies, scattered throughout, remind us that what descends can also rise.
The vertical format amplifies the sensation of falling. The canvas reads top to bottom with the logic of gravity. The composition connects the work to the sublime landscapes of J.M.W. Turner, who understood that the most honest depiction of nature required the surrender of control. Mashian achieves something similar through accumulation. The built-up impasto surface vibrates with the energy of a painting made in motion. Drift into Ascent is ambitious in scale, complex in material, and resonant as an image of turbulence and endurance.
