About the Artwork
"Femme 11" by Haleh Mashian is a bold and provocative composition that examines resistance, and the evolution of identity. Through the integration of shattered ceramic and mixed media elements, Mashian creates a figure that is both visually fragmented and conceptually whole—a woman shaped by experience yet unbroken in spirit.
The use of ceramic shards within the piece serves as both a material and symbolic gesture, reinforcing themes of defiance and empowerment. Mashian’s masterful use of color amplifies the dynamic energy of the painting. Stark contrasts between deep, expressive hair and kaleidoscopic fragments create a sense of movement, with blues, yellows, and fiery oranges interweaving to suggest both turmoil and triumph. The surrounding intensity does not consume her—instead, she appears to command it, shaping the chaos rather than being shaped by it.
"Femme 11" is an assertion of self-possession and defiance. Mashian reconstructs the image of womanhood in a way that is bold, unapologetic, and deeply resonant—a reflection of both the individual and the collective power found in transformation.
