About the Artwork

Hand-fabricated butterflies unfold across shades of white, blush, rose, and gold alive with quiet movement. The surface becomes its own environment, built through layered pigments, rich texture, and glimmers of gold leaf. The eye moves across the composition and is carried through a space that feels immersive and ethereal.

Garden of Flight operates through openness. The ground breathes. Butterflies are selectively placed in such a way that allows each form its own presence before the eye moves on to the next. The result is a piece where individual beings coexist without crowding one another.

Beneath the butterfly forms, the ground is built through layers of pigment that dissolve into pure atmosphere from a distance. This quality connects the work to the Color Field painters of the 1950s and 60s, particularly Helen Frankenthaler, who understood that a painting's ground could carry as much emotional weight as anything placed upon it.

The work moves gracefully between painting and sculpture. It resides in a place where transformation feels natural and inevitable. Garden of Flight is among the most quietly confident works in Mashian's Butterfly Series. It does not demand. It invites.
