In this mixed-media work, Aaron Sheppard explores the fragile space between concealment and revelation. Layers of pale washes, translucent surfaces, dripping paint, and embedded forms create a composition that feels suspended between presence and disappearance. Beneath the muted palette, fragments of imagery emerge only partially, suggesting memories, identities, or narratives that resist complete disclosure.

A recurring concern in Sheppard’s practice is the way meaning is constructed through accumulation, erasure, and reconstruction. Here, the heavily worked surface functions like a palimpsest, where traces of previous states remain visible beneath successive layers. The subtle inclusion of dimensional elements disrupts the flatness of the picture plane, reinforcing the tension between image and object.

The restrained palette of whites, creams, and pale greens lends the work an ethereal quality, while the drips and distressed textures introduce a sense of vulnerability and impermanence. Rather than presenting a definitive statement, Sheppard creates a space for contemplation—one in which absence becomes as significant as presence. The result is a quietly powerful meditation on memory, perception, and the elusive nature of what remains hidden beneath the surface.
