About the Artwork
Against a ground of pure black, dozens of butterflies ignite. Electric green, neon red, hot orange, teal, white, and gold, each one a small detonation of color against the dark. Mystic Seduction I is the Butterfly Series at its most theatrical and primal. It is a painting about what burns brightest in the absence of light.
The black ground is not empty. Mashian works with impasto, so that the surface carries ridges and striations that catch peripheral light and give the darkness dimension. Thin drips of paint trace vertical lines through the composition, remnants of process that Mashian leaves visible. The butterflies sit in relief against this ground, their edges raised, their colors asserting themselves with confidence.
The palette is unapologetically Pop. The saturated palette places the work in conversation with an American art tradition that treated color as a form of energy. But where Pop often maintained a cool, ironic distance from its subject, Mashian is entirely sincere. These butterflies are not commentary. They are celebration. Mashian's butterflies emerge from darkness in an act of pure becoming.
