About the Artwork
In Mystic Seduction II, Haleh Mashian unleashes dozens of butterfly silhouettes across a textured white ground. Each butterfly has a distinct color, pattern, and weight, collectively forming a living field of chromatic energy. The work belongs to Mashian’s Butterfly Series, in which she explores multiplicity, transformation, and the cumulative power of individual difference through the butterfly as a repeating motif.
The painting recalls the accumulation strategies of the Pattern and Decoration movement of the 1970s, where artists like Miriam Schapiro and Joyce Kozloff reclaimed decorative density. Mashian inherits that lineage while pushing it into something distinctly her own. The textured impasto surface, visible beneath the wings in ridges and striations, gives the work a sculptural presence, a physicality that pulls the viewer close. From a distance, the canvas reads as a shimmering atmospheric field. Up close, it reveals itself as a collection of singular moments, each butterfly its own small painting.
The result is a painting that operates simultaneously as joyful spectacle and rigorous formal study. It rewards the eye that moves across it and the mind that pauses to ask why no two are the same.
