About the Artwork
Inspired by the famous line from Grimm’s fairy tale; “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair”, Thomas Piekunka reimagines the story through a contemporary lens. Rather than depicting a single cascade of golden hair, Rapunzel presents an interwoven tapestry of colors and textures that reflect the diversity of human experience. Shades ranging from deep black and brown to auburn, blonde, silver, and copper evoke the many hair colors found across cultures and ethnicities around the world.
Created through Piekunka’s distinctive freed painting technique, the work transforms paint into a suspended, braided form that exists between painting, sculpture, and fiber art. The vertical strands descend gracefully before spreading outward at the base like roots, suggesting both connection and growth.
By expanding a familiar fairy tale beyond its traditional imagery, Piekunka introduces a more inclusive and universal symbolism. Rapunzel becomes a celebration of individuality within collective humanity, reminding viewers that the stories we inherit can evolve to embrace a broader vision of identity, belonging, and shared experience.
