Saffron Mirage

Saffron Mirage is a field of burning gold. The square canvas is saturated in saffron and deep orange, and its surface is worked into a crackled, carved texture where incised lines form a geometric lattice reminiscent of Moroccan tilework. Embossed into that surface are large butterflies and radiating sun medallions, visible more through relief than through color.

Scattered across the gold, smaller butterflies in teal, rust and deep brown provide points of contrast. The larger forms, painted in the same tone as the ground, seem to appear and disappear depending on the light, which gives the work its sense of mirage: an image shimmering at the edge of visibility.

Mineral pigment deepens the color and gives it an almost earthen weight, like spice or sunbaked clay. The cracks and ridges of the surface suggest age and weather, so the painting feels at once freshly bright and historically layered.

The combination of pattern, relief and heat evokes a desert courtyard at midday, where light is so strong that forms begin to waver. The eye keeps discovering new wings and medallions hidden in the texture.
