About the Artwork
Where Mashian's broader Butterfly Series revels in chromatic abundance, Transient Field starkly differs. The palette is stripped to silver, black, and white against a textured metallic ground. The result is a painting of restraint and psychological depth. Dozens of butterfly silhouettes move across the canvas in a loose drift, some rendered as solid black forms, others as white outlines barely distinguishable from the impasto surface beneath them.
Mashian works the metallic ground into a landscape of ridges, folds, and striations that catch light at every angle. This sensitivity to light as a living material connects her practice to the Luminist painters of the nineteenth century, who understood that the real subject of a painting is never the object depicted but the light that makes it visible.
The monochromatic restraint also situates the work in dialogue with painters like Agnes Martin, whose devotion to near-colorless fields revealed how much emotional range can exist within simplicity.
Transient Field is an exceptionally versatile work. Its refined palette integrates naturally into both residential and institutional settings, and its scale commands any room it enters.
