About the Artwork

A landscape caught between combustion and calm, Wilderness Rhapsody stages a dense stand of dark, blue-black trees against a wall of blazing red and orange foliage, split by a narrow band of still water reflecting a soft violet sky. The paint is worked in thick, gestural strokes throughout, dragged and layered until the forest edge dissolves into pure color, fire on one side, shadow on the other, with the water caught quietly between them.

The composition holds two extremes at once: the hush of dark woods and the roar of autumn in full ignition. Mashian lets the two registers collide directly at the water's edge, where reflection briefly interrupts the intensity on either side. The result is less a depiction of a place than a record of an atmosphere, wilderness experienced as feeling before it is understood as scenery.
