Burton Morris

20″ × 16″ × 3″

Silkscreen, Spray Paint, and Diamond Dust on Canvas

Part of Burton Morris’ solo exhibition Icons in Bloom at MASH Gallery, Couture Noir presents the rose as a luminous emblem suspended between image, object, and symbol. Rendered through glittering linework and set against a saturated ground, the composition transforms the familiar floral icon into something closer to a jewel or medallion. The rose, historically associated with romance, beauty, and luxury, appears simultaneously delicate and monumental, its shimmering surface recalling the brilliance of diamonds and the refinement of haute couture.

While Morris’ earlier contemporary pop art works emphasized crisp outlines and bold graphic clarity aligned with the traditions of classic Pop Art, this body of work introduces a heightened sense of material presence. The glitter surface activates the line itself, allowing the rose to shift between drawing and object. Light catches the textured outline, producing subtle variations that animate the icon and move it beyond the flatness historically associated with pop imagery.

The piece reflects Morris’ continued evolution from tightly controlled graphic reproduction toward a more dimensional and materially expressive visual language. By combining the recognizable immediacy of pop iconography with surfaces that reference jewelry, fashion, and luxury design, the rose becomes more than a decorative motif. It functions as a symbol of permanence and brilliance.

In Couture Noir, Morris expands the vocabulary of contemporary pop art by merging silkscreen lineage with sculptural surface and ornamental refinement. The result is an image that feels both timeless and contemporary, where the rose operates as an enduring cultural icon reframed through light, texture, and material presence.
