Acrylic, Spray Paint, and Layered Silkscreen on Canvas
Presented as part of Burton Morris’ solo exhibition Icons in Bloom at MASH Gallery, La Vie en Rose is a commanding work from the Sea of Roses series, where the single rose is expanded into a dense and immersive field of movement. Saturated in layered reds, the composition vibrates with intensity as silkscreened floral outlines collide with gestural sweeps of paint. The rose, historically a symbol of beauty and love, is no longer presented as a singular, polished emblem. It becomes an environment, an atmosphere of repetition and pulse.
Morris’ earlier pop works were defined by crisp black contour lines and graphic immediacy, aligning his practice with the lineage of classic Pop Art as shaped by artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Those works emphasized flatness and commercial clarity. In La Vie en Rose, Morris moves decisively beyond that framework. Through layered silkscreen, spray paint, and painterly interruption, the image accumulates rather than simply repeats. Blossoms dissolve into one another, creating visual density and spatial depth that challenge the historical flatness associated with pop art painting.
The monochromatic red palette intensifies the emotional register of the piece while reinforcing its connection to romance, luxury, and desire. At the same time, the visible layering and imperfect overlaps signal Morris’ embrace of process. He reopens the icon and allows it to breathe through variation and energy, transforming a familiar cultural motif into an expressive visual architecture. In doing so, Morris expands contemporary pop art beyond reproduction and branding, positioning it within a dialogue that merges abstraction, material experimentation, and the enduring symbolism of the rose.
