Burton Morris

48″ × 48″

Silkscreen, Spray Paint, and Acrylic on Canvas

Jardin Rouge is presented as part of Burton Morris’ solo exhibition Icons in Bloom at MASH Gallery. The work is a commanding monochromatic piece from the Sea of Roses series. At first glance, the canvas appears saturated in a field of uninterrupted red. Slowly, layered silkscreened roses begin to surface from within the tonal depth, emerging and dissolving along the edges and beneath the surface. The rose, historically a symbol of beauty, romance, and luxury, becomes both image and atmosphere.

In Morris’ earlier contemporary pop art works, bold black outlines and high-contrast color palettes reinforced the graphic immediacy associated with classic Pop Art. Influenced by the serial repetition of Andy Warhol and the commercial clarity of mid-century advertising, those works emphasized flatness and icon recognition. In Jardin Rouge, Morris pushes decisively beyond that framework. The repetition of the rose is submerged within layered pigment and painterly interruption, creating a field that feels immersive rather than illustrative.

The restrained palette intensifies the emotional resonance of the composition. Instead of presenting the rose as a sharply defined emblem, Morris abstracts it into a dense visual architecture of tone and pulse. The image breathes through subtle variations in surface, reflecting the artist’s evolution toward more expressive, process-driven compositions he describes as “perfect imperfections.”

By merging the language of silkscreen, abstraction, and luxury symbolism, Morris expands the boundaries of contemporary pop art. Jardin Rouge challenges the historical flatness of Pop Art and repositions repetition as atmospheric accumulation. The result is a sophisticated red abstract rose painting that bridges fashion, romance, and material experimentation while redefining the visual possibilities of Pop Art in the 21st century.
