This painting celebrates the 10-year anniversary of fashion designer Alexander McQueen’s last
collection ‘Plato’s Atlantis,’ which fell at the dawn of a global lockdown in 2020. The
collection reflected on how humans and technology might evolve, garments were a hybrid of
human and animal forms, the footwear was the most bizarre, these skeletal shoes, evoking the
bone structure of deep-sea vertebrates. In 2020 this felt like a timely social comment, with
surveillance and a ban on leaving the house, the juxtaposition of a grotto in an estate near the
artists house in Dorset and the impracticality of the McQueen shoe embody the need for
humans to evolve to survive.
