Burton Morris

40″ × 40″

Acrylic on Canvas

Salon de Coco reflects Burton Morris’ earlier exploration of contemporary consumer iconography and forms part of the artist’s broader visual dialogue with luxury culture. The composition constructs a stylized interior tableau where symbols associated with fashion and elegance, such as the Chanel No. 5 perfume bottle, designer handbag, pearls, and fashion publications, are assembled into a carefully orchestrated domestic scene.

In this period of Morris’ practice, form is tightly controlled and defined by crisp black outlines and flat planes of saturated color. This aesthetic approach recalls the work of Pop Art pioneers such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, who translated imagery from advertising, mass media, and consumer products into bold graphic compositions. Morris adopts this language but shifts its tone. Rather than presenting the imagery as critique, he frames these cultural symbols within an aspirational context that reflects the intersection of art, fashion, entertainment, and modern lifestyle.

Salon de Coco demonstrates the foundational visual vocabulary that helped define Morris’ career. The clarity of the lines and the graphic precision reinforce the enduring power of cultural icons and their role within contemporary visual culture. At the same time, the work provides an important point of contrast to the more recent paintings presented in Morris’ Icons in Bloom exhibition at MASH Gallery, where the artist moves beyond tightly rendered imagery toward layered surfaces and expressive, process-driven compositions.

Seen within the broader arc of Morris’ career, Salon de Coco represents a key moment in the development of his contemporary Pop Art language. The work captures the phase in which the artist established his signature iconography before evolving toward a more dimensional and painterly approach. This progression, from precise graphic imagery toward layered interpretation, marks Morris’ contribution to the ongoing reinvention of Pop Art in the 21st century.
